I don't know if I have mentioned it before this moment, but I got a Kindle. It was a gift from my husband for my birthday, and it was a very thoughtful gift. I was wholly surprised. It seemed an obvious gift for a writer, but I swear, I thought that I was getting a Kitchen Aid mixer (though I was NOT disappointed at all.)
The first book I bought was "Seeing Yourself as You Really Are," by the Dalai Llama. It was amazing to me that I could push a button and BAM! A book appeared in my palm. Holy shit. That was awesome. Even more awesome? My husband linked it up to his credit card. Hehe. So I can buy a book guilt-free with the push of a button.
I know that this sounds dangerous, but I have only bought two books as of today and my birthday, if you recall, was in August. So I'm frugal, at least. I bought my second book just yesterday, and it was not nearly as cerebral as my last purchase. This time, I bought "Are You There Vodka, It's me, Chelsea," by Chelsea Handler.
So what about the Kindle? I know the complaints, I made them myself before I had one... "I don't want to read on a Kindle because I can't turn a page." You were saying that in your head, weren't you. I know! I thought so too... until I realized: I could do both. Let me explain...
You know how sometimes, you are laying bed, and you have to keep switching what side you are laying on because of the page turning book you are reading? (If this a personal problem of my own, I wouldn't know it!) Anyway, I like that I don't have to turn a page on the Kindle is my point. Sometimes that is nice. And let me also say, instant gratification is the best thing ever. I want a book, I get a book.
Also? My suitcase is no longer crowded with all my books! I generally take 2-3 books on a vacation because I read about 5 books at a time (I know, I know, don't say it!) This really makes the decision on what to bring a lot easier.
Don't get me wrong, I still buy books--especially cookbooks! But there are times when a Kindle comes in handy and serves a great purpose. It's a replacement for the regular paperback, but it sure is a great companion... did I mention, I got a Kindle?
