I have been Pinterest's biggest lately. Seriously. It might be getting out of hand, but I figure in a couple weeks, I'll have my hands full with a baby and that may stem the tide of Pinterest interest. But, as it stands, I wanted to tackle another project, this time something a bit crafty. Last week it was my mother-in-law's birthday and I wanted to give her something special.
My only problem was that I in my baby-prepping madness, I've been a little inattentive to other things like, say, my mother-in-law's birthday. The best intentions.... I swear. Then I saw the cutest idea on Pinterest (thank goodness) in the form of those homemade sharpie mugs. I just had to try it, and I knew that since my mother-in-law is the world's most excited grandmother to be, I had just the thing to personalize it with!!!
I read up on it a little bit and learned that there are two kinds of sharpies in this world. Well, there might be more, but for our purposes, there are two: regular and oil-based. I went with the simplest form of this project that I could because that's just how I roll...I'm not generally the DIY kind of gal, so this was a little out of my comfort zone to begin with. Keeping it simple helped.
I used regular sharpie, and found a white mug at a local store. Seriously, the most challenging part of this whole experience was finding a white mug. I kid you not. But find one I did, and it was hand wash only, which is good because you don't want to really run this sucker through the dishwasher, anyway.
Then I practiced what I wanted to write on it, and then it was time to go for it. My mother-in-law wants to be called, "Grammy" and she says that it's because she wants to be "award winning." I am sure that both her and my own mother will have no problem being award winning in the grandma department, so I had no problem declaring her "award winning since 2014."
After I wrote on it, I put in the cold oven and let the oven preheat to 350 degrees with the mug inside it. When the oven was preheated, I let it bake for 30 minutes. Then I turned the oven off and left the mug in there until it cooled on its own. That's it.
Then I took this picture:
She loved her mug, which we gave to her along with some good tea too. All in all? I would do this again. If it fades over time, I can always make her another one, right?!
